South Central
An unforgettable vacation getaway awaits when you choose Pikes Peak lodging at a BBIC member bed and breakfast.
Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain - serve as the gateway to the South Central region of Colorado. The high towering rock formations at Garden of the Gods provide a spectacular sanctuary for all to walk, hike, and bike. The quaint towns of Manitou Springs, Cascade, Green Mountain Falls, and Woodland Park hug the base of Pikes Peak and present plenty of shopping and dining options when visiting the region. Don’t miss visiting the popular Air Force Academy, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and Pikes Peak Cog Railway on the way.
Feeling lucky? Don’t miss Cripple Creek and the gaming casinos that have replaced the old saloons and mining claims offices of this old boom town. Ride the train through the Royal Gorge, just west of Canon City.
The Arkansas River Valley is home to the greatest concentration of 14ers (peaks 14,000 feet or higher) in the lower 48 states and world-class whitewater excitement. Enjoy Rocky Mountain splendor at its finest as you hike the Colorado or Rainbow Trail, mountain bike along the Monarch Crest, or fly fish the blue ribbon waters of the Arkansas River. Delight in fresh powder skiing at some of Colorado’s Gem ski resorts of Monarch, Ski Cooper, as well as nearby Crested Butte. The historic mining and railroad towns of Leadville, Salida, and Buena Vista are now home to antique shops, micro-breweries, local coffee roasters, great restaurants, and unique shops.
Head South towards our nation’s newest National Park – the Great Sand Dunes, just east of Alamosa. Historic trains still roll through this part of the state; don’t miss a ride on the Scenic Rio Grand or the Cumbres & Toltec trains. This portion of our state is rich in history, heritage, and outdoor activities.
